Summary
This report comprises the text of an address given by the President of the World Bank Group to the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development. The address emphasizes the role that international institutions must play in bringing about a new era of international cooperation for sustainable development. The Bank ' s fundamental objective, to reduce poverty, while protecting the environment is the benchmark against which its performance as a development institution should be judged. The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and the World Bank, together with governments, the scientific community and a host of other organizations, have pooled their resources to create the Global Environment Facility (GEF). It is a unique mechanism which draws upon the different strengths of its participants in addressing agreed global environmental priorities. The costs of protecting the environment may appear high in absolute terms, however, in comparison with the benefits to be gained in economic development, poverty reduction, and improvement of the human condition, they are quite modest. A common effort is needed to ensure a common future.
