Summary
The Convention on Biological Diversity is an historic commitment by the world's nations to conserve biological diversity, to use biological resources sustainably and to share equitably the benefits arising from the use of genetic resources. It is the first global legal instrument to comprehensively address all aspects of biological diversity. Following its entry into force in December 1993, the Convention now has over 145 Contracting Parties engaged in implementing its 42 articles. The Guide was produced to facilitate this process and illustrates the scientific, technical and legal issues which the Convention raises. It contains a concise general overview of the Convention and explains its provisions. Background information includes national biodiversity strategies; biotechnology; environmental impact assessment; technology transfer; and intellectual property rights. There is also a detailed bibliography. The Guide suggests options for implementing the Convention, in many instances drawing on existing environmental policy documents and action plans including the World Conservation Strategy, Caring for the Earth, the Global Biodiversity Strategy and Agenda 21. This book is available in English, French and Spanish.
