Summary
This paper argues that environmental sustainability and poverty elimination are the century's key issues, but that they are not addressed holistically. It states that there are many ways that environmental improvements can help the poor, and that poverty alleviation can go hand-in-hand with achieving a better environment. To achieve these goals, decision-makers need a deeper and clearer understanding of the value of environmental services and the role that poor people can play in enhancing those services.
