learning events
The PCLG periodically organises of supports events that tackle key issues of relevance to Learning Group members. Some events will be organised specifically for members but we will also try to take advantage of existing international meetings where we can organise side events for more open participation.
This page includes details of those events including meeting reports and downloadable presentations. Learning Group members are welcome to suggest ideas for issues that might be explored at future events.
- “Biodiversity for Poverty Reduction Day " at CBD CoP9
Saturday 24th May 2008, Bonn, Germany
The IIED-facilitated Poverty and Conservation Learning Group (PCLG), together with the CBD Secretariat and the German Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN), is hosting a one day meeting to highlight emerging experience in linking biodiversity conservation and poverty reduction in policy and in practice. The event will take place in seminar room S 30/32 in the GSI (Gustav-Streseman_institute), on Saturday 24th May starting from 8:00 AM.
With a focus on lessons learned in linking conservation and poverty reduction, presentations will include the G8-commissioned study on the Economics of Biodiversity Loss; the follow up to the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment; experience from the CBD Secretariat in mainstreaming NBSAPs and PRSPs as well as a diverse array of other policy and practical initiatives.
The day will be divided into two sessions – the morning focussing on international and national policy initiatives, the afternoon on practical implementation. It provides an ideal networking opportunity for policy makers and practitioners to meet and learn from each other and to get up to speed with initiatives from the local to the international level. Lunch and early evening refreshments will be provided.
The venue can accommodate around 150 participants so for planning and catering purposes please indicate your interest in attending this event to pclg@iied.org. We look forward to meeting you there!

7th-8th November 2007, Zoological Society of London, London, UK
The 2007 PCLG Annual Symposium will take place on 7th-8th November 2007 at the Zoological Society of London (UK). The theme of this year's meeting is 'Climate Change, Conservation and Poverty: What are the implications of climate mitigation and adaptation for conservation-poverty linkages'. The PCLG symposium is provisionally planned as follows:
Day 1: During the first half of the day the PCLG Secretariat will report on the activities undertaken during the previous year. The second half of the day will be dedicated to a review and a discussion of the most recent initiatives addressing protected areas-poverty linkages.
Day 2: The second day will be devoted to the discussion of the topic 'Climate Change, Conservation and Poverty'. Sessions will address:
a. biodiversity as an adaptation mechanism for indigenous and local communities;
b. impacts of climate change on poverty as a result of changes in biodiversity;
c. implications of conservation-based climate mitigation approaches (avoided deforestation, carbon trading) for indigenous and local communities. We hope the outcomes of the meeting will be able to feed into the Climate CoP in December.
A more detailed – though still provisional – agenda for the meeting is available (see link below).
The PCLG annual symposium is intended as the main forum for PCLG members to meet and discuss issues of relevance to them as a group. We would therefore like to remind everyone of the importance of attending the annual meeting, which is an opportunity to bring members together to explore and share ideas relating to a specific theme, and to bring members up to speed with the key issues, the latest developments in policy and practice, and with members' experiences. 17th-19th July, Cambridge, UK
Three international conservation organisations (Fauna & Flora International, the African Wildlife Foundation and Birdlife International) organised a workshop to explore the challenges and solutions to monitoring and evaluating socio-economic/livelihoods impacts in conservation programs. With financial support from Swedbio, a two day workshop was held on 18th - 19th July 2007 in Cambridge, UK, at which representatives from a range of conservation and development organisations and academia gathered to share experiences of the application of socio-economic/livelihoods M&E. Focused around a series of presentations and discussion sessions, the goal of the workshop was to identify pragmatic recommendations and guidelines for conservation practitioners, that balance technical rigour with field realities. Some 40 delegates spanning 20 nationalities participated in the workshop. These included conservation field practitioners from 14 countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America, as well as those working in organisational headquarters on organisation-wide processes for M&E, reporting and lesson-learning. The involvement of selected representatives from the development sector, which has a longer history and experience of using and developing socio-economic/livelihoods M&E tools and processes, provided a valuable counterpoint to the discussion. The first day focused on comparing field level M&E tools and frameworks, whilst the second day focused on organisational process for M&E and reporting, and the challenges of reconciling field level, organisational and donor information requirements in a unified M&E system. Both days included presentations from conservation and development practitioners, and breakout discussion groups to explore key issues.

12-13 December 2005, UNEP-WCMC, Cambridge, UK
The inception meeting of the Poverty and Conservation Learning Group was convened in December 2005. 46 organisations that are actively involved in, or affected by, conservation-poverty linkages were invited. Of these, 27 organisations were able to participate in the meeting. The meeting was convened with three key aims:
1. To recap on the rationale for the Learning Group and to introduce potential Group members to each other
2. To review and agree proposed protocols of the Group
