Description
The Islamic Culture Foundation is a non-profit, non-partisan, strictly independent cultural and scientific Spanish organisation (registered as a private cultural foundation in the Registry of the Protectorate of Cultural Foundations of the Spanish Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport), which concerns itself exclusively with matters related to cultural research, development and cooperation. MEDOMED program is an initiative of FUNCI that pretends to achieve different goals in the Mediterranean and Middle East area regarding botanical gardens, sustainable development, cultural heritage and education.
Projects
Aleppo: The Town Council of Aleppo has assigned a 2,500- metre plot to the Islamic Culture Foundation within the 42-acre Assabil Public Park, which dates from the times of the French Protectorate, to create a garden with landscaping and botany of Andalusí inspiration fitting in harmoniously with its surroundings. The garden will have a Nature Centre with a permanent educational exhibition on the different historical and ecological aspects of the Andalusian Arab garden.
Jerusalem Andalusí Botanic Garden: The age-old, holy city of Jerusalem, meeting-point of the three monotheistic religions, is creating the Jerusalem Andalusí Botanic Garden. This garden will re-create the collections, philosophy, morphology and traditional irrigation systems of traditional Andalusí gardens, focusing on the conservation of Mediterranean, and particularly Palestinian, flora. It is to include a botanical library, a seed bank and a herbarium.
Restoration of the Jardin d’Essais Botaniques in Rabat: The Islamic Culture Foundation (FUNCI) is collaborating in the restoration and launching of the Jardin d’Essais Botaniques (JEB) in Rabat, a botanic garden set up in the early 20th century by the great French landscape gardener, Jean Claude Nicolas Forestier. The FUNCI is assisting the Jardin d’Essais by providing landscaping and botanical advice through a team of specialists. The JEB will thus become a scientific landmark for its research and conservation work, as well as its cultural, teaching and social activities. Since it forms part of the historical heritage of the city of Rabat, it will also become a tourist attraction.
