Summary
Poverty Mapping is a joint initiative by FAO, UNEP and the CGIAR. With funding from the Government of Norway, these three international organizations have come together to sharpen and enhance the use of state-of-the-art methodologies and tools for mapping poverty, food insecurity, and vulnerability.
More specifically, the Poverty Mapping project is dedicated to:
- analyse and map the spatial distribution of poverty;
- produce and promote the use of poverty maps and show linkages between poverty and food insecurity, the environment and development;
- promote the use of poverty maps in policy making and targeting assistance.
Although the project is officially finished, the website is continuously maintained by UNEP/GRID-Arendal with case studies from the project, maps, graphics and publications.
Outputs
The Poverty Mapping project's website provides a vast collection of poverty maps and graphics, and a group of case studies performed within the Poverty mapping project, with different focus and by different partners:
1) Geospatial Dimensions of Poverty and Food Security - A case study of Mexico: The objective of this project is to develop new methodologies for characterizing spatial and temporal variation in food insecurity and poverty using Mexico as a case-study.
2) Improved Mapping and Spatial Analysis of Food Security and Poverty in Ecuador: This project will identify the lack of access to food within Ecuador and test hypotheses regarding the causes of food insecurity in Ecuador.
3) Use of geo-spatial predictive drivers for reducing malnutrition levels of poor rural households in Nigeria: This research will identify and parameterise key factors and socio-economic / policy drivers that affect poverty, malnutrition and undernourishment levels in Nigeria.
4) Mapping and Beyond - Improving Welfare Policy Design and Targeting through Spatial Analysis of Poverty and Vulnerability: A Study of Malawi: Examining the issue from a spatial perspective, the project seeks a closer understanding of just what spatial factors determine which households in Malawi are particularly likely to see a disproportionate reduction in their welfare due to a range of negative shocks.
5) Livelihoods and Information Mapping in Kenya: The main objective of this project is to explore what is 'map-able' with respect to the five types of assets (physical, natural, social, financial and human), and work closely with community members to determine which of the spatial indicators of livelihood assets identified are the most useful.
6) Mapping and analysis of poverty and food insecurity in Bangladesh: This project seeks to develop methodologies and digital, geo-referenced sub-national data sets that allow more comprehensive analyses of the relationships between human well-being and geographical factors in areas where the poor concentrate, for better targeting of agricultural research and development programs.
7) Mapping Indicators for Analyzing the Temporal and Spatial Variability of Poverty and Food Insecurity in a River Basin: A case study of the Ruhuna river basin of Sri Lanka: The primary objective of the project is to develop a geo-referenced information base to understand spatial dynamics of poverty and food insecurity in Sri Lanka.
