The importance of non-timber forest products in rural livelihood security and as safety nets: a review of evidence from South Africa.

This paper examines the importance of NTFPs acting as daily and emergency nets, the contribution that these two functions make to poverty alleviation, and the direct use value of NTFPs for households in South Africa. Using a number of case studies, the authors then illustrate the concept of daily and emergency NTFP nets. They show through the paper that NTFPs play a important role in maintaining livelihoods, especially for the poorest within the community.
