Poverty, biodiversity and institutions in forest-agriculture ecotones in the Western Ghats and Eastern Himalaya ranges of India.

This paper focuses on the forest-agriculture ecotones in the western Ghats and Eastern Himalaya ranges of India. It aims at showing how to make land use in the ecotones more sustainable while contributing to biodiversity and institutional development. This was done in the context of the work by Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment (ATREE) in the area. Results indicate that ATREE's interventions have improved livelihoods through increased income from non-timber forest products (NTFPs), diversified livelihoods and enhanced agriculture production.
