Balancing development and conservation? An assessment of livelihood and environmental outcomes of non-timber forest product trade in Asia, Africa, and Latin America

This article tries to answer the question of to what extent and under which conditions non timber forest product trade leads to forest conservation and livelihood improvement. In order to answer this question, the authors analysed 55 cases of NTFP trade from Asia, Africa and Latin America. The authors conclude that, while trade in NTFP can have some benefits for forest conservation and livelihoods, its effects are complex and overall it is not a win win solution. In the majority of circumstances, positive livelihoods outcomes tend to be associated with negative conservation outcomes.
