Interrelations between mangrove ecosystem, local economy and social sustainability in Caeté Estuary, North Brazil

This articles describes the subsistence and commercial uses of mangroves products near the Caete' estuary in north Brazil. About 70% of the approximately 13,000 people residing in the research area were interviewed in he course of the study. The results shows that 83% of the people living in the research area derive subsistence income from the use of mangroves resources, while 68% derive cash income. Collecting, processing and selling the mangrove crab is the main source of income in the study area, followed by commercial fishing.
