Seeing the wood for the trees: the role of woody resources for the construction of gender specific household cultural artefacts in non-traditional communities in the Eastern Cape, South Africa.

This paper examines the cultural importance of woody species in the construction of two gender specific cultural artefacts for amaXhosa people in South Africa. The paper finds that they are of significant cultural importance, and that valuation of woody species should therefore include not only their utilitarian values for fuel wood etc, but also their cultural value as spiritual homes for their ancestors.
