Benefits of viable home gardens for family health and sustainable livelihoods

This chapter examines the benefits of home gardens for both rural and urban families, the main benefits derived are: income and enhanced rural employment through additional or off-season production. Improved food security. Increased availability of food and better nutrition through food diversity. Decreased risk through diversification. Environmental benefits from recycling water and waste nutrients, controlling shade, dust and erosion, and maintaining or increasing local biodiversity.
